Dr. Spooky’s Terrific Leap Year

Welcome to 2024 and a leap year at that!

Did you know Greek and Ukrainian folklore includes the belief that getting married on a leap year will ultimately end in divorce? But don’t despair! There is also the Irish belief that during a leap year, women can flip the script and propose to their partner (seen in the aptly named movie Leap Year starring Amy Adams).

One of the most exciting moments of my life (not to mention 2024) was The Scream Kings Podcast episode recorded with Michael Grant. He and his wife Katherine Applegate, writing under the pen name K.A. Applegate, penned my favorite series of all time: Animorphs. If you’re not enlightened, Animorphs follows a group of middle school kids given the power to morph into any animal whose DNA they’ve acquired for two hours. Why did a centaur alien give some kids the power to morph you might ask? Because parasitic slugs, Yeerks, are slowly infiltrating the human race, taking over the brains of those you hold near and dear… and you have no clue.

Not only is Elfangor the hottest Andalite I’ve ever laid eyes on, but the series is one of the best I’ve read. Multi-dimensional characters, unbelievable world building, and moral quandaries that still haunt me to this day… It won’t surprise you that I identify with the most mentally unstable and occasionally psychotic character Rachel.

Did you ever huddle together with your friends in the middle school bathroom chanting, “Bloody Mary” three times? Maybe played a fun game of “Light as a feather, stiff as a board” during a giggly sleepover all hopped up on sugar? If so, this podcast episode is for you!

Megan, host of the sensational TheQueerCrypt as seen on TikTok, joined The Scream Kings to discuss creepy urban legends and lore, including Crying Boy Paintings, The Three Kings Ritual, The Bell Witch, while we each discuss a piece of local lore (naturally I go with some alien shit). We had a spooky time and you will too! Give it a listen: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/scream-kings/id1286579957?i=1000645027049

And as if things couldn’t get more exciting, I attended my very first book club! The lovely ladies wined and dined me, plying me with sweets and Prosecco, and we discussed… The Broken Heart!

Writing a novel is one thing, but attending a book club where people discuss said novel? Nerve wracking in the best way. Luckily the gals were all medical and understood my dark sense of humor and warped sense of revenge… and they wanted more! I’m hoping to return (with more snacks to sample!) when I release the sequel.

The year has just begun so saddle up and like Shania Twain says… “Let’s go girls”.

Stay spooky!
