First things first, Dr. Spooky news:
I’ve submitted an entry to Alien Buddha Press‘ Horror Showdown for this year. Will I defend my title? Here’s hoping!
Currently, I’m working on a story inspired by my weekend at StokerCon. I can’t wait to share it with ya’ll!
On my Vocal Media account, I’ve added a few stories.
The Boogeysam: Young Jane fears the monster in her bedroom. https://vocal.media/horror/the-boogeysam
The Plague: My entry to the Past Life challenge where you envision your occupation if you were born in a different historical period. Naturally, I’d be a plague doctor. Earned Top Story of June! https://vocal.media/history/the-plague-tugv0mqu
Catch and Release: My entry to the Microheist challenge, limited to 200 words. Remember that urban legend of someone waking up in a bathtub of ice with their organs missing? https://vocal.media/horror/catch-and-release-0r506xt
Now to the books!
Yeehaw! You ever wonder what I’m reading and what I think about it? Fear not! Now you can get a glimpse of what books I precariously balance on my nightstand… much to my wife’s disdain. One day they will topple on top of me, tragically killing me. Yet… it’s the way I would want to go out.
Sweet, Sour, & Spicy

I had the pleasure of meeting Bridgett Nelson at StokerCon as we both were on the Make No Mistake About It: How To Avoid Medical Mistakes In Your Writing panel. Bridgett once was an OR nurse and let me tell you, her medical background makes her writing that much better!
The book is divided into three parts: Sweet, Sour, & Spicy, each a distinct story.
Sweet: Follows Arlo and his pug Clyde, who share an unmistakable, unbreakable bond. Even after Clyde’s passing, he shows up to protect his human from a vengeful spirit.
Sour: A deranged serial killer is menacing unsuspecting women. Weapon of choice? A gigli saw! I’ve never had the pleasure of watching an amputation in the OR but Bridgett provides such awful, bone chilling detail… it’s like I was there!

Spicy: Follows two friends on a remote, weekend getaway with their girlfriends. The gals surprise them with sexy games that initially are great fun but soon turn to godawful, splatterpunk horror. It was a lot of fun to read this feeling both turned on and horrified!

Sister, Maiden, Monster

I received an ARC of this novel in my StokerCon swag bag and my wife (who is generally not as much of a horror fan as I am) read it first. She’s not one for the fantastical, preferring books that are rooted in reality, but she finished this book in short order. I enjoyed it more than she did but I think my horror background (having read lots of H.P. Lovecraft) enriched my experience. Quite the page turner!
This book combines many of my favorite things: plagues, monsters, and lesbians. A new plague sweeps the world, causing alarming changes in those who contract it. Some die while others undergo startling transformations, changing the face of humanity as we know it. The book follows three women with intertwined fates navigating their new reality, some more murder happy than others.
The medical knowledge sprinkled within is top notch and as someone with a biology degree, I can tell that Snyder did her research. Add in some cosmic horror and little splashes of humor here and there… you have a great book. I’m hoping there will be a sequel.
