- Alien
- This movie resides as #1 in my brain for several reasons:
- My mother introduced me to Ridley’s Scott’s masterpiece as a young lass, forever changing me.
- Ellen Ripley is THE best final girl in existence.
- Not only is she the only voice of reason throughout the entirety of the flick arguing for quarantine when the crew comes back to the Nostromo with facehugger in tow; she wises up to Ash’s unfailing service to the Weyland-Yutani Corporation and puts a stop to that; she kicks Xenomorphy ass with minimal weapons; and most importantly… SHE GOES BACK FOR JONESY!
- Practical effects hold up.
- Sigourney Weaver’s portrayal of a powerful woman who don’t need no man has always stuck with me.
- This movie resides as #1 in my brain for several reasons:
- Aliens
- As a sequel, it’s nearly better than the first. Rather than being strictly a horror flick in space, this one adds action and humor to the mix.
- Colonial Marines. The firepower, banter, and cast of characters (Hicks, Hudson, and Vasquez) can’t be beat.
- We go from Ash to Bishop, an android you can actually trust.
- Newt, a resourceful little girl who somehow survived a total infestation of Xenomorphs.
- The egg chamber scene gets me every time. The sheer number of eggs, the enormity of the Alien Queen, with stakes that have never been higher. Even after repeat viewings, it makes my skin absolutely crawl.
- Best one-liners in existence including my most favorite line in all of cinema:
- Ripley: “Get away from her, you bitch!”
- As a sequel, it’s nearly better than the first. Rather than being strictly a horror flick in space, this one adds action and humor to the mix.
- The Craft
- I saw this as a teen, and it resonated with me for multiple reasons.
- As someone who had to change schools several times during my life, being the new girl with no friends held a certain terror for me. When Sarah falls in with Nancy, Tracy, and Bonnie, who recognize her talent and allow her to join their coven, I cheered.
- The thought that one could have influence over their life which often seems uncontrollable was attractive. Vanquish bullies, change your circumstances, regain your beauty, and making the object of your affection fall for you… who wouldn’t want that?
- Neve Campbell. I mean… look at her!
- Nancy. While she’s a villain, she’s sympathetic. Suffering with a terrible stepfather constantly pawing at her, ridiculed by classmates, taunted as trailer trash and a whore, you almost can’t blame her when the power goes to her head.
- Snakes, nasty bugs, Sarah’s losing her friends plus nearly being raped by the man she cast a love spell on, Nancy’s complete loss of control, were VERY unnerving.
- The soundtrack is fire.
- I saw this as a teen, and it resonated with me for multiple reasons.
- The Perfection
- My mom told me she read about a movie that “was making people sick” and naturally I was like “game on, bro”. I went into this movie completely blind as to what it was about and was sure glad I did!
- Sexy sapphics.
- A heaping help of infection/body horror.
- Revenge. Oh, how I love revenge.
- An absolutely bananas plot I did NOT see coming. Going into this without an idea of what is coming is worth it. Trust me on this.
- My mom told me she read about a movie that “was making people sick” and naturally I was like “game on, bro”. I went into this movie completely blind as to what it was about and was sure glad I did!
- Scream
- My favorite slasher.
- One of the most horrifying opening scenes I can recall. Drew Barrymore killed it.
- Nothing is more terrifying than having to talk on the phone.
- “What’s your favorite scary movie?” Iconic.
- Neve Campbell. Duh.
- The absolute meta-ness of this movie is delicious. Randy’s outlining the rules of scary movies is the perfect plot device.
- My favorite slasher.
- The Faculty
- High school already sucks. The only way to really make it worse? Alien invasion.
- Wonderful cast of characters played by Josh Hartness, Elijah Wood, Jordana Brewster, Clea DuVall, plus many more!
- Body horror out the wazoo.
- Soundtrack is solid.
- High school already sucks. The only way to really make it worse? Alien invasion.
- Final Destination
- The whole franchise has contributed to at least ten different phobias (you won’t catch me behind a logging truck,) but the whole airplane scene is forever burned into my memory. And as someone with a massive flying phobia, this lives rent-free in my brain.
- Sure, we all know we are going to die but it’s a fact we can often push from our minds. The idea that we cannot cheat Death, especially once it sets Its eyes on you… yikes.
- Devon Sawa is my favorite horror King.
- Memorable death scenes: need I bring up the plane crash again? Bathroom scene, trains, oh my!
- It spawned sequels that also massively rock.
- American Mary
- A medical student plying her skills in the underground body-mod community tickles all my happy places.
- Grisly revenge on powerful men using their prestige and status to abuse women.
- Did I mention amazing body horror?
- Memorable characters.
- Operating in heels? You go girl!
- Fresh
- Another medical horror I greatly enjoy, this time it’s a plastic surgeon using his skills for some real fucked up shit: harvesting human meat from hot women.
- A victim turning the tables on her captor.
- The true horrors of dating… even when you think you’ve found a winner… have you really?
- More body horror (sensing a theme here?).
- The Sixth Sense
- A movie which boasts one of the best twists in history.
- Rewatching this flick only adds to its enjoyment since you’ll pick up on details you’d never noted before.
- The scene where Cole shows the video of the mother poisoning her daughter has haunted me ever since I saw it for the first time.
- Haley Joel Osment sold the shit out of Cole.
- “I see dead people.” What a line!
